Surfboards and Fine Art Meet in New Display

People in the surfing community are often creating interesting and beautiful collaborations and this recent partnership is no exception. Photographer Chris Burkard is known for his nature and surf photography. And when Matt Parker of Album Surfboards found out that Burkard was interested in a collaboration, he was eager to make it happen. Album has been pushing the envelope with their surfboard design for years, including with asymmetrical boards.

In a recent article from The Inertia, author Dylan Heyden explains some of the process. Burkard and Parker chose to use abstract images for the surfboard series. So they picked some of Burkard's breathtaking images of glacial rivers in Iceland taken from thousands of feet in the air. The result is swirling pops of color in blue, gold, and green. In order to get the image on the board, they printed the photographs on fiberglass cloth so the image could wrap around the board. This material gave them that flexibility, as opposed to fabric or rice paper used for imaging on other surfboards with resin inlays.

Parker created two sets of the three boards, each with a different image and valued at $4,500 a piece. One set is on display in Encinitas at the Lux Art Institute from early November through the end of December. The other set will be on display at Burkard's Avila Beach gallery.
